Whitinsville Christian National Honor Society Inducts New Members

On November 21 Whitinsville Christian High School’s John T. Bajema chapter of the National Honor Society inducted 20 new members. The evening was highlighted by special music provided by an 8-member vocal group and a strings quartet.

Over the past year, NHS members raised $2,500 to provide farm animals for underpriviledged families in Africa.  Mrs. Patty MacDonald of World Vision was present to receive the gift and explain how these animals will dramatically improve the quality of life for at least ten families.

The guest speaker was Captain Shawn Brown of the Massachusetts Army National Guard. Captain Brown compared the four essential characteristics of an NHS student (scholarship, service, leadership and character) to the Army’s set of core values (loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage). He then challenged the current NHS members and new inductees to be aware of the small choices they make each day stating, “In the end, these small, private, day-to-day decisions will eventually reveal your true character for all the world to see.”
The inductees are: Isaac Bates, Robert Brodeur, Rebecca Caswell, Ashley Cook, Andrew Cozzens, Micah Curtis,
James Dunlap, Samantha Ervin, Antonio Estrella, Ana Fomin, Paul Hamlet, Caleb Holt, Elizabeth LaCava, Maya Palmisciano, Deanna Ristaino, Kathryn Rubin, William Rugo, Olivia Smith, Molly Stark, and Robert Vigeant.

Congratulations to the Whitinsville Christian School  Robotics Team, who earned a Silver Medal Finalist Award at the November 12 Savage Soccer Competition at WPI in Worcester, MA.  WCS competed against 57 teams from 22 High Schools.  This marks the 4th consecutive year that Whitinsville Christian has received an award from WPI for the Savage Soccer competition.

Stay Tuned Brass Quintet is a student-led group that grew out of the Brass Ensemble at Whitinsville Christian School.  As the school year drew to a close in the Spring of 2011, some students wanted to continue to play together.  They formed the quintet, with the goal of expanding their vision beyond the school to the community.  Their first show was in early July, when they played patriotic tunes for the Northbridge Fireworks.  They have also performed at an outdoor concert at River Bend Farm, and at some local church services.  Their next community performance will be at the Uxbridge First Holiday Night events on Saturday, December 3, when they will play a selection of Christmas and classical pieces.  They will be performing at 6:30 pm at the Uxbridge Town Hall, along with a line-up of a variety of local musical talent.

Stay Tuned Brass Quintet

Trumpets:  Mickey Cronin (grade 9) & Jake Gulinello (10), French Horn: Naomi LaDine (7)
Trombone: Steven LaDine (10), Tuba: Rachel LaDine (12)

Stay Tuned Brass is continually expanding their repertoire, and seeking more performance venues.  If you would like to have brass music at an event, leave a message at Whitinsville Christian School, 508 234-8211, ext 10.

WHITINSVILLE CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL NATIONAL MERIT
COMMENDED STUDENTS ANNOUNCED

Whitinsville, Mass. — The principal, Christopher Vander Baan, of Whitinsville Christian High School announced today that Samantha Ervin, daughter of Dr. Daniel and Cheryl Ervin of Princeton; Rachel LaDine, daughter of James and Dr. Barbara LaDine of Whitinsville; Joshua Lewis, son of Bruce and Kim Lewis of Franklin; and Jessica Mitchell, daughter of Chris and Cindi Mitchell of Franklin, have been named Commended Students in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program.  A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented by Mr. Vander Baan to these scholastically talented seniors.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise.  Although they will not continue in the 2012 competition for National Merit Scholarships, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2012 competition by taking the 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®).

“The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC.  “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation.  We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”

SUMMIT 2011

On Friday, September 9, Whitinsville Christian School's 8th grade class spent a day away at Summit, 2011. To kick-start the year, the class and teachers, Mrs. Cullen, Mr. DeWeerd, and Mrs. Ebbeling, brainstormed possibilities of service to WCS and the surrounding community and ways of enriching community within the middle school. They took part in many activities and discussions about leadership through service, based on the theme of the day: “It’s not about me.  It’s about God and others.”  As a first step, the 8th graders collected snack items brought in by 6th, 7th, and 8th graders earlier in the week; carried the items to Summit (held at Pleasant Street Christian Reformed Church); and created snack packs for the People First Food Pantry in Uxbridge. Deb Blackburn, president of the board of directors for the People First Food Pantry, explained to the students the way that snack packs are used in the food pantry. The 8th graders were excited to fill 200 one gallon bags with snacks, juice boxes, and notes.
