American Authors - From C-SPAN, an in-depth look at 45 American writers including biographical and historical background information on each.
Wired for Books - Audio interviews with some of the best writers of the twentieth century, plus readings from poetry and literature.
American Trancendentalism Web - From Virginia Commonwealth University, this site includes information on transcendentalist authors, roots and influences, ideas, and literary criticism, as well as bibliographies and links. Searchable.
The Moonlit Road - A wonderful site where you can read or listen to ghost stories and folktales of the American South. Enjoy.

Page by Page Books - Another site that allows you to read classics and other public domain books.
American Treasures of the Library of Congress - A permanent exhibition including items from Thomas Jefferson's personal library, such as original drafts of the Gettysburg Address and notebooks that belonged to Walt Whitman. A great site for those interested in American literature or American history
Bartleby.com - The Cambridge History of English and American Literature. An 18-volume encyclopedia indexed by author, chapter, and bibliographies.
American Writers - A companion site to C-SPAN's series, this site provides biographical information and historical background plus links to more information on 45 American writers.
The Online Books Page - from University of Pennsylvania, a gateway to free books and periodicals available on the Internet.
Visual Thesaurus - displays the interrelationships between words and meanings as spatial maps. Needs I.E. 4/Netscape 6 or better
The American HeritageŽ Book of English Usage - Searchable guide to word choice, grammar, style, pronounciation, and more. Very annoying ad banners and pop-ups.
