Virtual High School -- NOW OPEN to High School AND 7th/8th graders!
An exciting learning opportunity at WCHS
WCHS is a member of a consortium of schools across the country and the world offering a broad curriculum of on-line courses through Virtual High School.
Why Virtual High School?
VHS gives our students the opportunity to choose from a wide variety of courses not offered at Whitinsville Christian School. They can explore subject areas they think they might like to pursue in college, selecting from a full catalog of semester-length and full-year courses including core, elective, advanced placement (AP) and Pre-AP courses. What’s more, if your student simply enjoys using technology and wants the challenge and flexibility of a high-quality online class, VHS could be a good fit
VHS courses are taught using Blackboard®, a web-based learning tool. Already in use at universities across the country, Blackboard® allows instructors to build and manage course content; administer tests, quizzes and assignments; report grades and deliver individual feedback to students; and provide an environment for students to study, collaborate and interact. Learning to use a web-based tool such as Blackboard® while your student is still in high school could make his or her freshman year at college just a bit easier to manage! We are excited to provide this learning opportunity at Whitinsville Christian High School.
With VHS, students can “go to class” wherever and whenever they have internet access, be it at school, at home, or even at a bookstore or coffee shop! Because classes and lectures are not synchronous (held or delivered at any set time with all class members together) VHS work can be done at a time convenient to the individual student, offering great scheduling flexibility. At WCHS, most VHS students use their study hall to work on VHS; however, they are not required to do so. They may choose to do all of their VHS class work outside of school hours.
What makes a good VHS student?
You don’t have to be an “A” student to qualify as a good VHS student. However, being self-disciplined, consistent with online course “attendance,” and communicating regularly with your VHS teacher and site coordinator will be large factors in whether you and VHS are a good fit. For more information, stop by the Guidance Office to take a quick, pre-student survey!
Which courses are available?
For a complete listing of courses offered through VHS, visit www.govhs.org.
Please keep in mind that a student may not take a course of the identical subject and academic level (i.e. honors, AP, or standard) currently offered at WCHS. For instance, a VHS course in AP Calculus AB could not be taken in place of the AP Calculus AB course taught at WCHS.
A VHS Registration Form and Student Contract may be found under WCS Forms on the home page. For more details on our VHS course selection and academic policies, please contact the Guidance Department at 508-234-8211, ext. 32.
